1. Our approach to privacy
We built The Mission Bible to be privacy‑friendly. We don't run ads, we don't use third‑party advertising or behavioural tracking, and we never sell or rent your personal information.
We only hold the personal information we need to run your account and give you your own reading experience — such as your progress, streaks, study time and goals, which are shown back to you. Beyond that, we look at usage only in an aggregated, anonymous form (overall statistics), not to profile you as an individual.
This policy explains what we collect, why, who helps us run the Service, and your rights under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
2. What we collect
On your device (everyone, including anonymous visitors). Your settings (languages, voices, speeds, theme, font and similar), your reading position and local progress, which prompts and tour steps you've seen, and a local cache of audio for offline and fast playback. This stays in your browser and we don't receive it unless you sign in.
On our servers (signed‑in users only):
- Account details — your email address, a securely hashed password (handled by our authentication provider), your sign‑up and last sign‑in dates, and, if you use Google sign‑in, your Google identity.
- Profile — display name, your native and learning languages, your last reading position, streak, study dates and your saved settings.
- Your progress — which verses you've read or completed, and how many seconds you've studied and verses you've read each day. This is used to show you your own stats, streaks and goals.
- Contribution records (supporters only) — handled through our payment provider, Stripe: identifiers such as your Stripe customer and payment IDs, invoice links, amount, currency and status, and the email you gave at checkout. We never receive or store your card number or card details — these go directly to Stripe.
Aggregated and operational information. We keep technical records of what the Service generated (for example audio or a word study), how much it cost, and overall usage — this is not tied to your account. To suggest an interface language, we briefly use a one‑way hashed value of your IP address plus your country; we do not store your actual IP address. Our hosting provider also keeps standard server logs.
3. How and why we use your information
We use your information to:
- create and run your account and keep you signed in;
- sync your settings and progress across your devices, and show you your reading stats, streaks and goals;
- send you necessary service emails (such as email verification and important notices);
- process voluntary contributions through Stripe and show you your payment history;
- understand overall use of the Service through aggregated, anonymous statistics so we can keep it running and improve it; and
- keep the Service secure and prevent misuse.
We collect this information to provide the features you ask for and to run the Service properly, consistent with the information privacy principles in the Privacy Act 2020.
4. Cookies and local storage
We use device storage (such as local storage) to remember your settings, progress and sign‑in. This is functional — it makes the Service work. We do not use advertising or cross‑site tracking cookies.
5. Who we share it with
We don't sell or trade your personal information. We share it only with the service providers who help us run The Mission Bible, and only so they can do that job:
| Provider | What they help with | What they can see |
|---|---|---|
| Lovable Cloud | Database, accounts, file storage and app hosting | Your stored account and progress data |
| Cloudflare | DNS and content delivery | IP address and request details |
| Stripe | Contribution processing and invoices | Name/email and payment details you enter at checkout |
| Resend | Sending service emails | Recipient email address and message content |
| ElevenLabs | High‑quality narrator voices | Public‑domain scripture text only (no personal data) |
| Google (Gemini, via our AI provider) | Generating narration and word studies | Public‑domain scripture and word prompts only (no personal data) |
The scripture and word text sent to the voice and language providers is public‑domain content and carries no information about who you are.
We may also disclose personal information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights, users or the Service.
6. Overseas storage and transfer
Some of our providers are based overseas (mainly in the United States), so your information may be stored or processed outside New Zealand. When it is, we take reasonable steps — including relying on reputable providers with their own privacy protections — so your information is handled with safeguards comparable to those required under New Zealand law.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your account and profile information for as long as you have an account, and for a reasonable period afterwards, then delete or anonymise it. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your profile and progress data (see section 8). Contribution records are kept for as long as we need them for accounting, tax and legal reasons. Aggregated and anonymous statistics, which don't identify you, may be kept indefinitely. Email verification tokens are short‑lived and single‑use.
8. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can:
- Access the personal information we hold about you;
- Correct it if it's wrong;
- Export or delete your account, including your profile and progress data.
To make a request, or to ask us anything about your privacy, email support@themissionbible.com. We'll respond within the timeframes the Privacy Act requires. If you're not happy with how we handle it, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz).
9. Children
The Service is intended for a general audience and is not directed at young children. We don't knowingly collect more information than we need from anyone. If a child uses the Service, we encourage a parent or guardian to be involved. If you believe a child has given us personal information and you'd like it removed, contact us and we'll delete it.
10. How we protect your information
We take security seriously. Access to your data is scoped to your own account, sensitive operations run only on our servers after re‑checking permissions, service credentials are never exposed to your browser, verification tokens are stored hashed and expire, and payment events are verified before we record them. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
11. If something goes wrong
If a privacy breach happens that could cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as required by the Privacy Act 2020.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make a significant change we'll take reasonable steps to let you know, such as a notice in the app. The "last updated" date above shows the current version.
